Greece。Crete。Minoan culture in Heraklion 克諾索斯遺址之探尋
The reason to visit the largest city of Crete—Heraklion, one was about transportation. Because the ship to Santorini, that I planned to go next, was departed from Heraklion; on the other hand, Knossos is an important tourism attraction, that is ancient site of Minoan culture, is located near Heraklion center.
The Palace of Knossos is considered as Minoan civilization that was the era that Athens prince Theseus fought to Minotaur. Whether the story regarding Minotaur is true or not, the ruin of Minoan palace is here anyway. It is the largest Bronze Age archaeological sites on Crete, also is considered Europe’s oldest city. So it is one of places that I wanted to visit for sure.
The Palace of Knossos is not far from city center, take within half hour by bus. Visitors of Knossos buy tickets usually with archaeological museum together. On one hand, there are many cultural relics from Knossos site have been moved to museum and preserved there; on the other hand, it charges just one euro more for both places (adult), so it is reasonable option to buy ticket for both. And the half price available for students outside EU, and free for EU students.
Walked to the ruin area through corridor, was like using time machine back to old era.
Knossos area is about 10 km2. The palace was built around 2100-1800 BC according to archaeological researches, it is similar to Xia Dynasty of Chinese history (2070-1600 BC). However, Xia Dynasty was thought as legend dynasty by some researchers, since there are still not ruins ,that absolutely belong to this time, were found until now. Compared to this, the part of Greek mythology regarding Minoan palace is seems more true.
Minoan civilization seems to have worshipped primarily goddesses, and their culture has been described as being based on a "matriarchal religion”. Many sculpture relics about females were found in Knossos, has been moved to archaeological museum.
I found that many old cultures are actually goddess worshipped or matriarchal society, compared to now that was led by males, it should be interested to know the transition process and reasons.
By the way, I found two big hearts were showed on the sky, looked so nice. Maybe it was because strong goddess energy here …(just guess~ LOl )
Different location to Knossos, the archaeological museum is in city center area, I visited here after Knossos. Museum exhibits rich Minoan collections, is vital places to know and learn the Minoan culture.
